World Water Week 2024, organized by SIWI – Stockholm International Water Institute, centered on the theme “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future.” This year’s focus highlighted the essential role of water cooperation in achieving peace and security, emphasizing the need for regional and global collaboration to create a sustainable future.
A significant part of the event was the Uniting Streams panel discussion, where the H-HOPE project participated. This panel underscored the importance of partnerships among academia, technology providers, and stakeholders in advancing water security and resilience.
The H-HOPE project, represented by Steven Frigerio, demonstrated how these collaborations are crucial for transforming innovative research into practical solutions for complex water management issues. The discussion featured Hidden Hydropower and its potential to revolutionise the utilisation of water flows. An exemplary case was the DIWIEN project, which partnered with Stadtgemeinde Ferlach, a municipality in Austria. This collaboration showcased how water flows can be harnessed to power infrastructure in new and sustainable ways, extending beyond traditional hydropower.
The panel also addressed the pressing challenge of water leakage, with one-third of the world’s water lost due to inefficiencies in detection and high operational costs. H-HOPE’s efforts in developing energy harvesting technologies highlight the importance of partnerships not only in validating innovations but also in addressing stakeholder perceptions, which is crucial for broader adoption.
World Water Week 2024 reinforced that solving global water security challenges requires a multidisciplinary approach and strong networks.
