A closer look at H-HOPE’s research results on identifying and measuring flow rate velocities in water networks – Factsheet now online!
How can we identify the best sites to recover hydro energy from water systems? This pivotal question drives the H-HOPE project.

This work was carried out by the project partner Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona (ETSEIB – UPC), including Xavier Escaler and David Bermejo Plana, and have developed a robust methodology for identifying pilot sites ideal for deploying the H-HOPE energy harvester. The team analysed a variety of water systems—piping networks, open streams, and lagoons—using key operational parameters like Flow Rate and Pressure Levels. This rigorous evaluation allowed us to select pilot sites with the best potential for hydro energy recovery.
The research led to the identification of promising locations across Europe working with organisations such as Aigües de Barcelona, Spain, ACQUE VERONESI, Italy as well as Vattenfall in Sweden.
Each site was chosen based on, hydraulic power potential, flow stability and patterns and compatibility with energy harvesting systems.
The factsheet highlights critical findings, for example:
- Flow Rates: Most frequently around 20 l/s, simplifying system optimisation for a single operational condition.
- Daily Variability: Nighttime flow velocities are significantly lower than daytime.
- Seasonal Trends: Monthly analysis revealed that July sees the highest water velocities, providing optimal conditions for energy harvesting.
The findings from these pilot sites will shape the deployment of the H-HOPE energy harvester, ensuring tailored performance for maximum energy extraction.
