The H-HOPE Project’s Consortium Meeting recently convened in Barcelona, where project partners gathered to assess progress and align on next steps. Held at Can Serra in Parc de les Aigües, this two-day meeting offered a comprehensive review of the project’s achievements and future directions.
Unlocking the Environmental and Resilience Potential of H-HOPE
WP2, which focuses on the environmental and resilience dimensions of H-HOPE, reported encouraging progress. Socio-technical assessments are underway, with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools already developed for a Reykjavik case study. These tools will be applied to additional case studies in the coming year, further enhancing our understanding of H-HOPE technology’s scalability and resilience potential. Stakeholder interviews, now complete in Iceland, Italy, and ongoing in Austria, are set to provide deeper insights into the socio-technical landscape across diverse regions.
Pilot Sites and Testing Facilities Are Ready for Action
Under WP3, data collection, cleaning, and initial pilot site identification are complete, setting the stage for testing of energy harvesting systems with real-world data in the coming months. Testing facilities for WP5 (piping applications) and WP6 (open stream channels) are now operational, marking a significant milestone. Looking ahead, WP7, focusing on open channel applications, has created a task force to coordinate contributions and ensure timely progress, especially during the limited summer 2025 testing window.
DIY Platform Inspires Hands-On Innovation
One of the most exciting advancements came from WP8, with the launch of a prototype DIY platform led by the University of Ljubljana. This interactive resource empowers users with tools and tutorials to implement small-scale hydropower solutions, offering case studies like 3D-printed current meters to illustrate practical, do-it-yourself applications. The platform’s user-friendly approach aligns well with H-HOPE’s mission to democratise hydropower knowledge and application.
Dissemination and Upcoming Events
With robust engagement from stakeholders and partners alike, WP9 has developed an effective dissemination strategy, supporting knowledge-sharing across both technical and non-technical audiences. Looking forward, H-HOPE’s next Intermediate Conference is scheduled for next year. Planning is already underway to make this event a milestone gathering for industry leaders, policymakers, and academics.
Insightful Study Visit to Aigües de Barcelona’s Control Center
The meeting concluded with a site visit to Aigües de Barcelona’s control center, where partners had the chance to observe real-time data collection and management practices within the city’s water cycle. This visit provided a unique perspective on how hydropower projects like H-HOPE can benefit from and contribute to urban water management systems.
The consortium is optimistic about the road ahead, committed to innovation and collaboration that will propel sustainable hydropower technologies to new heights. With advancements in technology, data-sharing platforms, and a strong community of stakeholders, H-HOPE is poised to lead the way in unlocking the hidden potential of hydropower.
