As the push for clean, reliable energy intensifies across Europe, it’s clear we need to look beyond traditional sources. One of the most overlooked opportunities? The untapped hydropower potential already flowing through our water networks.
We recently hosted a panel discussion titled “Hidden Hydropower Potentials in Water Networks,” which brought together researchers, utility experts, and industry leaders to explore how we can better harness this opportunity. The session was moderated by Xavier Escaler and featured a rich exchange of ideas and real-world experiences.
Eduard Doujak shared findings from the DIWIEN project, which takes a system-wide look at how to recover energy across water infrastructure. His message was clear: there are opportunities everywhere — if we have the tools and mindset to identify and act on them.
Pierpaolo Rugiero of ACQUE VERONESI brought the utility perspective, highlighting the practical challenges of implementing energy recovery technologies on the ground. His insights showed just how important it is to align innovation with operational realities.

Finally, David Bermejo Plana and Xavier Escaler of UPC presented key findings from Work Package 3, focusing on hydropower integration. Their research ties directly into practical applications that can help bridge the gap between theory and real-world impact.
The conversation made one thing very clear: we’re only scratching the surface of what’s possible. Unlocking the full potential of hydropower in water systems will require more than just new technologies. It calls for collaboration across sectors, flexible regulation, and a shared vision for a more sustainable, energy-efficient future.
